  1.         Roosevelt gained a national reputation as a hero during the Spanish-American War. Later he became governor of New York, attacking corruption vigorously, and in 1900, he accepted the vice-presidential nomination under McKinley, with his eyes set on becoming president four years later, yet fate had a quicker time table.
